Always check the obvious first. Not knowing your network setup, is your server setup to send email?

Have you tested it?

Other things you may need to check are:

Is sendmail running? if not, start it up and see how many of your email notifications swamp roots mailbox. Is sendmail configured? Are you sending email off server? Are you relaying? Are you sending email off network? Are you behind a NAT? If so, does your PBX have a DNS entry? If you are behind a NAT, you probably should setup with a DDNS service like dyndns.com and also subscribe to their mailhop service. If you are behind a NAT, your public IP is probably blackholed anyway, so sending email off network will probably fail about 50% of the time at best. Hookup with dyndns.com or a similiar service and save hours of wasted time.

tail /var/log/maillog will show you if the message left your pbx. If the message left your pbx and you still havent received it then youre barking up the wrong tree. Blame your poor mail admin skills.
