How to Use Configuration Manager
Configuration Manager is the web-based administration interface for the Thirdlane Platform. This page explains the key elements of the interface and how to use them effectively.
Screen Layout
A typical Configuration Manager screen has these elements:
- Menu (left sidebar) - Navigates to all features, organized by section
- Main Section (center) - Displays the current form or grid for the selected feature
- Toolbar (top) - Shows the logo, currently logged-in user, and Logout link
- Status Bar (bottom) - Shows license and copyright information
- Tenant Selector (top, Multi Tenant only) - Selects the current tenant for management
- Help Pane (bottom of menu) - Shows a brief description and documentation link for the current feature
Menu Navigation
Browsing the Menu
The menu on the left side is organized into sections:
- Platform Management - System-wide settings, telephony, cluster management, and tools
- Tenant Configuration - Users, routing, features, call center, and integrations for the currently selected tenant
- Reports - Call and message detail records, recorded calls, CC interactions, analytics, and Grafana call reports
- Status - Current state of users, services, and system counts (system administrators only)
- Diagnostics - System metrics, logs, audit trail, banned IPs, and operational tools (system administrators only)
Sections can be expanded and collapsed by clicking on them. Use the expand/collapse buttons at the top of the menu to open or close all sections at once.
Searching the Menu
The search box at the top of the menu lets you filter menu items in real time. Start typing and the menu will show only items matching your text. Click the X button to clear the search and restore the full menu.
Global Search
The magnifying glass icon next to the menu search opens Global Search. This searches across all entity types — users, queues, agents, departments, emergency locations, routes, DIDs, IVRs, schedules, office modes, hunt groups, and trunks. Double-click any result to open it for editing.
Tenant Selector (Multi Tenant)
In Thirdlane Multi Tenant, the Tenant Selector at the top of the screen shows the currently selected tenant. Click the selector icon to switch tenants. All operations under “Tenant Configuration” apply to the currently selected tenant.
The tenant selection is remembered across sessions using browser cookies.
Working with Grids
Most sections display data in a grid (table) format. Grids support:
Sorting
Click any column heading to sort by that column. Click again to reverse the sort order.
Filtering
Many grids include a filter row at the top. Type in a filter field to narrow results. Some grids have dropdown filters for specific fields.
Editing Objects
There are several ways to edit an object from a grid:
- Double-click a row to open its edit form
- Click the pencil icon in the edit column
- Some fields support inline editing — click the cell directly to modify its value
Selecting Multiple Objects
Use the checkboxes in the leftmost column to select multiple records. This enables group operations such as deleting selected items, updating selected items, or performing batch changes.
Cloning Objects
When editing an object, some forms offer a Clone button. This creates a copy of the current object that you can save under a different name — useful for creating similar configurations quickly.
Tagging Objects
Tags provide a flexible way to classify and organize objects. You can tag User Extensions, Tenants, and other objects with arbitrary labels — for example, by team, role, location, project, or any custom classification.
- Tag Selected - Select multiple objects in a grid and use the Tag Selected button in the toolbar to assign a tag to all selected items at once
- Manage Tags - Use Manage Tags to view all existing tags across entity types, see how many objects use each tag, and rename tags as needed
- Tag field - Individual objects can also be tagged directly from their edit form
Tags are also available in the dialplan via Action Scripts, enabling custom routing logic based on tags.
Help and Documentation
Contextual Help
The Help Pane at the bottom of the left sidebar shows a brief description of the currently selected feature. When a documentation link is available, it appears as a clickable link that opens the relevant documentation page.
Field-Level Help
Most form fields include tooltips that appear when you hover over the field name. These provide context-specific guidance for each setting.
Documentation Assistant
The documentation site includes a search assistant (accessible via the chat button or Ctrl+K) that can help you find relevant documentation by searching across all pages.
Required Fields
Required form fields are marked with a red asterisk (*) after the field name. Forms cannot be saved until all required fields are filled.
Tips for Effective Use
-
Use default values where possible. Set defaults at the system level (Default Values), then at the Tenant level. Individual objects inherit from their parents, so only a few fields need to be set individually.
-
Use Bulk Generator to create multiple objects at once. After installing Template Bundles for your phones and setting defaults, the Bulk Generator can quickly create User Extensions, Inbound Routes, and provision phones.
-
Create destination objects first, then wire them together. For example: create User Extensions, then IVR/Voice Menus or Hunt Groups that route to them, then Time Range Groups, DIDs, and finally the Inbound Routes that connect everything.
-
Extend with Action Scripts. Use the built-in Action Scripts or create your own by cloning and extending them. Attach action scripts to Feature Codes for additional PBX functionality.
-
Run System Audit regularly. The System Audit tool validates your configuration and identifies reference issues, routing problems, and permission conflicts before they affect service.
