I am trying to add a second sip trunk to my system (both from the same provider) and when I do the system stops working, I cannot make internal or external calls. I delete the trunk and reboot and everything comes back. Is there a reason or is it not as easy as just adding a another sip trunk.

You may have a problem if they have the same ip address

in order for them to work from the same IP you must use proxy authentication. Many providers use switches that are purely IP based without authentication. Since asterisk is only using IP to identify the channel, two channels configured for the same IP results in asterisk choosing only 1 to process all inbound calls against.
